Process
In HIP-Petrohemija, ethylene and co-products are obtained by steam cracking of primary, low-octane gasoline. The goal of this process is to convert larger hydrocarbon compounds into compounds of lower molecular weight, which also have double bonds between carbon atoms.
Ethylene produced at HIP-Petrohemija is of polymer grade and can be used immediately, without purification, for the production of polymers, because the ethylene content is at least 99.9% vol.
The propylene produced is chemical grade, with a typical propylene content of 94.5-95.5% vol.
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) is an additive for unleaded motor gasoline. The addition of MTBE increases the octane number of gasoline and improves engine performance, and the increased oxygen content enables better fuel combustion. MTBE is obtained by the reaction of isobutene and methanol. To obtain isobutene, raffinate 1 is used, the remainder of the C4-fraction from which 1,3-butadiene was extracted, which greatly utilized the potential of the Synthetic Rubber Factory.
